What is the origin of the term "beauty mark?" When did a facial beauty mark become a sign of attractiveness?

I checked wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty_mark but I feel it doesn’t give a full explanation.

I think it came from ancient times when "gods" were jealous and put a mark on those who were too perfect. A similar thing occurs in blanket weaving where they intentionally drop a stitch so the blanket is not perfect.
