North Korean do …
North Korean do enjoy free education till university as well as free medical care… but for sure if you got cancer or some other complex illness your survival rate is much lower than average western countries.

And you could …
And you could quibble about the original meaning of the word “liberal” as well, meaning a laissez-faire form of market economics, but that is not the modern use of the word, which today implies the exact opposite. Language evolves. When you say socialism, modern nomenclature invokes the image of advanced social democracies like those of Europe, a better word would be communism, but that too seems inadequate. NK doesn’t seem to have an economy at all. It’s just a prison-state.

Everyone in the …
Everyone in the North Korean society is equal… People that keep Kim Jong-il in power are just ‘more equal’.
The rest is just used as a ‘usefull recourse, that’s why people get shot or sent to labour camps when they try to leave the country. Leaving means that people aren’t productive for the country anymore, death means the same, and in that way you can’t be productive for the ‘enemy’. (from a North Korean perspective that would be Japan or the US)

Alex, socialism in …
Alex, socialism in the classical sense is characterized by, among other things, government ownership of the means of production (business) and the revocation of private property rights (you own nothing). North Korea is the purest example of socialism in existence. The countries you mention have large private sector economies, and all have private property rights. In my opinion, they would not be categorized as socialist. But, since we live in democracies, you can disagree with me.

North Korea isn’t …
North Korea isn’t socialist, they are a bizarre form of hyper-Maoist cult. Sweden, Denmark, Holland, France, Britain, Germany, New Zealand and Canada are socialist, Japan is socialist, South Korea is socialist. Countries that are responsible for the social well-being, and answerable to society. Kim Jong Il’s country is not socialist., it’s a giant cult compound where the followers starve and the leadership enjoys its kleptocratic privileges.

This is incredibly …
This is incredibly sad. The goal of socialism is to create a “classless” society where everyone is equal. What you are seeing here is the special treatment given to the ruling class that keep Kim Jong Il in power, in exchange for sustenance and privilege. While these elite members of DPRK society are being pampered with cucumber facials, children are dying of starvation in the streest of Pyongyang, and all across the nation. This video is a sharp reminder of how socialism has failed humanity.
